How to import Poliigon Models into Rhino
To import models into Rhino, make sure you’re first selecting .fbx as your download format from Poliigon. Then follow these steps:
Navigate to the File menu, and select ‘Import’, then select your .fbx from the unzipped download. (note: keep a copy of the zipped download as well, as it will help with texture importing in the next section).
The import dialogue box will have several options. You can likely safely ignore most of the options unless they are pertinent to your scene, however we recommend checking the “Map fbx Y to Rhino Z”. This will ensure your model imports in the correct orientation.
How to import Poliigon PBR Textures into Rhino
To import materials into Rhino, switch to the Materials panel
Right click, and select “Create physically based material from texture files…”
select the zipped file you download from Poliigon.
A dialogue box will open, and Rhino will have attempted to automatically match files with the correct inputs. Simply verify if the assignments are correct, and switch any that Rhino incorrectly identified.
You can either drag and drop the newly created material to your object, or select your object then right click on the material and select “Assign to objects”
You may notice that by default the texture is not mapped correctly onto the model. Switch to the ‘Properties’ Panel, then select the ‘Texture Mapping’ sub-panel
You should see a warning regarding the texture mapping. Click the text in the warning to fix the mapping.
For textures that need displacement, Switch to the ‘Displacement’ sub-panel, ensure that the ‘On’ check box is ticked
Click on ‘Assign Texture’ then select the displacement map from the texture file list of the material you just imported
How to import Poliigon HDRIs into Rhino
To Import Poliigon HDRIs into Rhino, select the ‘Render Tools’ option on the main toolbar, then select ‘Environments’ from the sub toolbar.
Click the image of the default studio HDRI next to ‘Name and Type’. The window should now be showing you HDRI options.
Click the folder icon next to the filename, and select your downloaded Poliigon HDRI. If your viewport is set to rendered view, you should see the environment lighting update to reflect the change.
You can now adjust the HDRI to your liking, such as the Azimuth and Altitude settings
