How to import Poliigon Models into Rhino

To import models into Rhino, first select .fbx as your download format from Poliigon. Then follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the File menu, and select ‘Import’, then select your .fbx from the unzipped download. (Note: keep a copy of the zipped download as well, as it will help with texture importing in the next section.)

  2. The import dialog box will have several options. You can probably ignore most options unless they matter to your scene. But we suggest checking “Map .fbx Y to Rhino Z.” This helps your model import in the right orientation.

How to import Poliigon PBR Textures into Rhino

  1. To import materials into Rhino, switch to the Materials panel.

  2. Right-click and select “Create physically based material from texture files…”

  1. Select the zipped file you downloaded from Poliigon.

  2. A dialogue box will pop up. Rhino will try to match files with the right inputs. Check if the assignments are right. If Rhino got any wrong, switch them.

  3. You can drag and drop the new material onto your object. Or, you can select your object, right-click the material, and choose “Assign to objects.”

  4. You may notice that, by default, the texture is not mapped correctly onto the model. Switch to the ‘Properties’ panel, then select the ‘Texture Mapping’ sub-panel.

  5. You should see a warning regarding the texture mapping. Click the text in the warning to fix the mapping.

  1. For textures needing displacement, go to the ‘Displacement’ sub-panel. Make sure the ‘On’ checkbox is checked.

  2. Click on ‘Assign Texture,' then select the displacement map from the texture file list of the material you just imported.

How to import Poliigon HDRIs into Rhino

  1. To import Poliigon HDRIs into Rhino, click on ‘Render Tools’ in the main toolbar. Then, choose ‘Environments’ from the sub-toolbar.

  2. Click the image of the default studio HDRI below "Name and Type." The window should now be showing you HDRI options.

  3. Click the folder icon next to the filename, and select your downloaded Poliigon HDRI. If your viewport is set to rendered view, you should see the environment lighting update to reflect the change.

  4. You can now adjust the HDRI to your liking, such as the azimuth and altitude settings.
