a guide on how to resolve missing textures in Blender

Updated over 2 months ago

If you're seeing pink textures in your scene in Blender, it could be one of two things:

  1. Historically, when rendering with Eevee, too many textures in a scene could sometimes cause Eevee to display textures incorrectly. As of writing this article, we have not tested if this is still the case with the most recent version of Eevee

  2. You have moved the file locations for either your .blend file, or assets used in your scene, or both. In which case, the files must be re-linked, see below:

Re-Linking missing files

If you're working with a relatively small scene and need to re-link a couple missing files, your quickest option may be to go to File > External Data > Find Missing Files, navigate to each of the missing files and confirm the location. Blender will then re-link those assets.

If you're consistently moving files between workstations and need a more permanent solution to this issue, you have a couple options:

  1. Make use of Blender's relative path options. You can read more about this feature in Blender's manual documentation:

  2. Pack the .blend file, so file paths become irrelevant: File > External Data > Pack Resources. This will embed any assets used in the scene into the .blend file, allowing you to move the .blend file without worrying about moving assets separately
