Using displacement textures in 3DS Max with V-Ray

A 3DS Max/V-Ray tutorial on properly using the displacement textures in Poliigon materials.

Updated over a week ago

We have some great photoscanned ground materials in our library and in this video I'll show you how to make the most of them in 3DS Max with V-Ray.

Steps

  • Load in a material in the usual way, either via the material converter or manually. (If you're doing it manually, be sure to load in the Displacement texture.)

  • Add a VRayDisplacementMod modifier to the modifier stack.

  • Connect the output of the displacement texture to the texture input of the VRayDisplacementMod (Disconnect it from the Shader if it's connected.)

  • Make sure 2D Mapping is selected.

  • Load up the VRay render settings and under the heading of Displacement, adjust the edge length of the subdivision. (Lower values mean more detail at the expense of memory usage and render times.)

  • Adjust the strength of the displacement via the Amount value within the VRayDisplacementMod.

If needed, you can watch our other video, Using Poliigon materials in 3DS Max with V-Ray prior to this video.
